The food processing industry in India is expanding at a rapid rate The Ministry of Food Processing Industries has implemented remarkable initiatives and reached key milestones in fiscal 2023-23. These achievements show the government's commitment to increasing the income of farmers in the country, reducing losses from postharvest, and generating job opportunities. This is a comprehensive overview of these programs:
1. Increased Sectoral Assistance:
The Ministry saw an astonishing 73% growth from its updated estimate for 2022-23, which was Rs. 1901.59 billion to around the amount of Rs. 3287.65 crore by 2023-24 an increase in the interest of the government in food processing.
2. More Export Share:
Processing foods exports saw a remarkable increase between 2014-15 and 2022-23 growing by 13.7 percent of exports from agriculture up to 25.6 percent, indicating their growing importance in international trade.
3. Employment Creation:
The Food Processing Industry was among the ten top job creators in manufacturing making up 12.22 percent of the registered or organized sector jobs created between 2014 and 2015. Food processors played a crucial job in generating employment opportunities and promoting economic growth.
4. PMFME Scheme Results
In January 2023, the impressive number of 51,130 loans granted under the subsidy-linked credit part of the Pradhan Mantri Formalization of Micro-Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme was reached, representing a huge achievement that helped to strengthen micro-enterprises and encouraged local entrepreneurship.
5. World Food India Event
(WFI) was a must-attend event that all the stakeholders were involved in and attracted more than 1,200 national and international exhibitors from 90 nations with 91 international CXOs from different organizations to the celebrations. MoUs of 33,000 crores were signed to evidence the success of WFI as an event aimed at encouraging investment and collaboration within the manufacturing industries for food processing.
6. Millet Promotion:
During efforts to mark this year's International Year of Millets 2023 (IYM 2023) In celebration of the IYM 2023, the Ministry organized several Millet Roadshows, exhibitions, conferences, and roadshows throughout 27 districts to emphasize the nutritional and economic benefits of millet consumption. In addition, government initiatives such as accepting initiatives related to 30 millets under the Production Link Incentive Program as well as providing direct loans to millet processing companies provide government support for millet production and consumption.
