Conceptualized under PM Modi's vision of 'Minimum Government, Maximum Governance', GeM was launched in 2016 to provide transparent and efficient public procurement through digital platforms. It directly connects over 20 lakh sellers with over 3 lakh government buyers.

GeM has expanded offerings to over 12,200 products/services categories, eliminating corrupt practices in government spending. The services segment has seen tremendous growth, contributing 98% more to GMV than last year, projected to exceed Rs 1.5 lakh crore this fiscal.

While central entities comprise 82% of current GMV, states' engagement has increased. States have placed cumulative orders worth Rs 49,302 crore, a 56% rise. Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi are the top procuring states.

GeM initiated onboarding of 70,000+ Panchayats and 660+ Cooperatives, resulting in Rs 265 crore transactions. Their participation demonstrates the ease of conducting business through GeM's unified digital ecosystem. GeM promotes inclusivity, with nearly 50% orders awarded to MSEs, especially women-led and SC/ST MSEs. It has enabled Rs 3.27 lakh crore business to MSEs so far, including Rs 22,200 crore by women-led MSEs. 392 new product categories added for arts/crafts too.

In summary, GeM has revolutionized public procurement with transparency, efficiency and inclusivity. Its continued success demonstrates the crucial role of digital platforms in good governance, uplifting marginalized segments and driving welfare expenditure.
