The sector is second only to agriculture in the employment it provides to Indian citizens, with more than 110 million people employed in MSMEs.

These enterprises give a boost to local economies, encourage self-employment and help bridge the regional divide, whether it is in metropolitan cities, tier-II and tier-III towns or even remote villages. And their ubiquity has helped to democratise economic growth, bringing development to every corner of the nation.

MSMEs are often regarded as classrooms of innovation. They are versatile, flexible and entrepreneurial, allowing them to respond quickly to the changing demands of the market and technology. India’s vibrant start-up ecosystem has also strengthened the MSME landscape with many start-ups turning into successful businesses, creating jobs and value. Young entrepreneurs, women-led businesses and social enterprises are reshaping the sector with innovative ideas and sustainable business practices.

Steering Sustainable and Inclusive Growth

One of the defining strengths of India’s MSME sector is its contribution to inclusive development. The sector is an enabler of women entrepreneurs, rural industrialisation, traditional crafts and income generation for the marginal communities. Family-run enterprises, artisan clusters and self-help groups are still keeping India’s rich cultural heritage alive and contributing to its economic prosperity.

The digital transformation that has taken place in recent years has further boosted MSME growth. Digital payments, e-commerce platforms, online marketplaces, cloud-based business solutions and government-backed digital initiatives have enabled even the smallest of businesses to access national and global markets. This digital revolution has helped improve operational efficiency, financial inclusion and customer outreach, allowing MSMEs to compete in an increasingly interconnected world.

Government Support to Strengthen the Ecosystem

The Government of India has launched several initiatives to improve access to finance, ease compliance, boost digital adoption and promote competitiveness, recognising the strategic importance of MSMEs. The business environment for small enterprises has been strengthened by schemes like Udyam Registration, Credit Guarantee Scheme, Government e-Marketplace (GeM), ONDC, PM Vishwakarma, and several technology upgradation and skill development programmes.

These initiatives are not only to support existing businesses but also to promote new entrepreneurs, innovation, and improve India’s manufacturing capabilities under the larger national initiatives like Make in India, Digital India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Challenges that Call for Collective Action

 MSMEs still face several challenges despite their remarkable contribution. Some of the ongoing challenges are a lack of access to affordable finance, high input costs, technology gaps, skill gaps, infrastructure bottlenecks, delayed payments and increasing global competition. New compliance requirements are also being created by climate change and changing sustainability standards, which many small enterprises need to prepare for.

These challenges require concerted efforts by policymakers, financial institutions, industry bodies and technology providers as well as larger companies. “MSMEs will need to thrive in the increasingly competitive global economy, which will require increasing investments in digital infrastructure, capacity building, green technologies and access to markets.
